How these seven were ranked

The committee scored every option on the same checklist, then kept only the places they backed with a net score of 3 or higher. The dots on each card rate different categories such as — typical resort character, official UK health advice, and long-term April/May climate averages.

What was scored

  • Health and safety — crime, petty theft, nightlife risk, FCDO travel advice, food and water hygiene.
  • Ease of transport — typical London flight time, how close the resort is to the airport, and whether 20–30 people can move as a group.
  • Beach quality — sand vs pebbles, cleanliness, space, and how usable it is at the start of May.
  • Amenities — supermarket, pharmacy, cash machine, and a walkable strip for snacks and drinks.
  • Hospital access — nearest proper hospital, and what a UK or EU passport holder actually uses there (GHIC/EHIC vs insurance only).
  • Food quality — beyond the hotel buffet: local restaurants, hygiene, and whether the area is known for decent food.
  • Climate, 30 Apr–3 May — daytime heat, evening chill, rain risk, and whether the sea is swimable.

Extra checks for this group

  • Three-night practicality — long flights and 90-minute transfers waste a short trip.
  • Group fit — can one hotel or two neighbouring hotels take 20–30 people, and is the resort mixed-age rather than a stag strip.
  • Resort character — family package, party town, quiet residential, or purpose-built all-inclusive.
  • Insurance and entry — GHIC/EHIC in the EU; no reciprocal cover in Turkey. UK passports are visa-free for short stays here, but Turkey needs 150 days of passport validity.
  • English and cards — how easy it is to sort a pharmacy, taxi or bill if someone is unwell.
  • Season opening — some pools, beach bars and even hotel wings are still closed in early May.

Healthcare in brief

Spain and Greece

A UK GHIC or still-valid EHIC gets medically necessary state care on the same basis as a local. It is not private-hospital cover and it never covers flying someone home. Hotels in tourist areas often call a private clinic first — say you want the public hospital if you are relying on the card. Travel insurance is still essential.

Turkey

No UK reciprocal cover for ordinary holidaymakers. Insurance is not optional. British prescriptions are not accepted in Turkish pharmacies. Emergency number in Spain, Greece and Turkey: 112.

The shortlist

Seven places. Vote for two. The two with the most points are what we send to the travel agent.

Costa del Sol

Shortest mainland transfer. Sunniest of the Spanish options.

Fuengirola

Spain

UK flight about 2 hours 45 minutes to Malaga.
Then about 25–35 minutes by road to the resort.

Weather: days 21–23°C, nights 13–15°C, sea 16–18°C. Sunniest of the mainland options. Sea still fresh.

Long sandy urban beach, huge supermarket and pharmacy choice, English widely spoken. Food is ordinary tourist-Spanish but with real Spanish town options behind the front.

Early May: Best for seafront walks, bike hire along the promenade, and a day trip up to Mijas pueblo. The sea is still cool for most swimmers. This is not a surf coast — expect sitting-out weather, not water-sports season.

Hospital: Public and private hospitals on the Costa del Sol, used to UK patients. GHIC/EHIC works in public care; hotels may still send you private, so insurance stays essential.

Crete

Strongest food on the list. EU healthcare, slightly longer flight than Spain.

Adelianos Kampos

Greece

UK flight about 3 hours 45 minutes to Heraklion or Chania.
Heraklion is then about 1 hour 15 minutes by road to Adelianos Kampos; Chania is about 1 hour.

Weather: days 20–23°C, nights 12–14°C, sea 17–18°C. Drier and milder than Corfu in May.

Sandy/shingle resort beach next to a real town (Rethymno) with shops, pharmacies and tavernas. Best food on the list.

Early May: Strong for hiking and old-town wandering — Rethymno’s alleys, nearby gorges and coastal paths are in season before the heat. The north-coast sea is still cool. Not a surf spot; evenings are more tavernas than water sports.

Hospital: General hospital in Rethymno; GHIC/EHIC in state care. Island hospitals are more limited than mainland Spain, and FCDO notes island ambulance gaps, so insurance still matters.

Costa Brava and Maresme

Same coast, same weather, same hospitals. Difference is town personality.

30 Apr–early May: days 17–20°C, nights 8–12°C, sea 14–16°C, around 6 hours of sun and a fair chance of a shower. Pack layers. The sea will feel cold to most of the group.

Calella

Spain

UK flight about 2 hours 15 minutes to Girona or Barcelona.
Girona is then about 45–60 minutes by road to the resort; Barcelona is about 1 hour 15 minutes.

Proper town, not just a hotel strip. Promenade, shops, pharmacy, trains along the coast. Beach is a long urban sandy stretch — decent, not wild. Strongest amenities score on this coast.

Early May: Good for the long promenade, coastal-path walks, and trains along the Maresme for a day out. Hills behind town suit an easy hike. The sea is cold for most of the group. No reliable surf — this is a walking and town weekend, not a swim trip.

Hospital: Hospital Sant Jaume is in Calella. GHIC/EHIC for state care.

Malgrat de Mar

Spain

UK flight about 2 hours 15 minutes to Girona or Barcelona.
Girona is then about 45–60 minutes by road to the resort; Barcelona is about 1 hour 15 minutes.

Wide sandy beach, close to the water, package hotels, supermarket and pharmacy in town. Very similar to Santa Susanna; pick whichever hotel block can take the group.

Early May: Wide beach walks, bike hire, and the Montnegre-Corredor park behind town if people want a proper hike. Same cold sea as Calella. Not a surf or swim destination in the first days of May.

Hospital: Calella hospital (Sant Jaume) is a short hop. GHIC/EHIC for state care.

Majorca, east coast

Same island, same airport, same hospital story. Beach quality is the split.

30 Apr–early May: days 19–22°C, nights 11–14°C, sea 16–18°C. Often brighter than Costa Brava. After a 2 hour 30 minute flight to Palma, the east-coast resorts are still more than an hour away by road.

Cala Millor

Spain

UK flight about 2 hours 30 minutes to Palma.
Then about 1 hour 10 minutes by road across the island to the resort.

Long pale sandy beach, the classic east-coast package resort. Shops, pharmacy and a walkable front. Best beach-plus-amenities mix on the island list.

Early May: Mallorca’s cycling season is already on, and the bay is easy for walks or bike hire. Caves at Porto Cristo and the Llevant hills are nearby. The east coast is sheltered, so this is not a surf beach. Sea still cool; better for sitting out than a long swim.

Hospital: Hospital de Manacor is the local general hospital; Palma for major trauma. GHIC/EHIC for state care.

Sa Coma

Spain

UK flight about 2 hours 30 minutes to Palma.
Then about 1 hour 5 minutes by road across the island to the resort, next door to Cala Millor.

Quieter sister of Cala Millor, still a proper sandy bay, still walkable. Good if the group wants the same beach quality with less strip noise.

Early May: Same cycling and cave-day-trip options as Cala Millor, with a quieter bay for walks. A short hop along the front if the group wants more shops. Still not surf weather, and the sea is refreshing rather than warm.

Hospital: Same story as Cala Millor — Hospital de Manacor locally, Palma for major trauma. GHIC/EHIC for state care.

Turkey

Warmest Mediterranean package value. No GHIC. Insurance is not optional.

30 Apr–early May: days 21–25°C, nights 12–16°C, sea 18–20°C and rising. Among the best swim chances after the Canaries.

Marmaris

Turkey

UK flight about 4 hours to Dalaman.
Then about 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 40 minutes by a winding road to Marmaris.

Proper town amenities and nightlife. Beach in the centre is ordinary; Icmeler nearby is better. Dalaman flight plus a winding transfer. Livelier than the other Turkey options, slightly weaker as a beach holiday.

Early May: Warmest swim chance on this shortlist if anyone is keen, plus pine-hill walks to Icmeler and the old-town bazaar. Boat trips and jeep days start to run if the weather holds. Not a surf destination; evenings can still need a jumper.

Hospital: No GHIC. Care is insurance only — state hospital and private clinics in town. British prescriptions are not accepted in Turkish pharmacies.
